Announcement from Coach Hill:
The 8th grade boys played in what was one of the most exciting hard fought games ever in the history of middle school football. Lake Air had their defense in place and was stifling anything the Indians threw at them. They were taking balls out of our hands and stopping Derrious Burns in the backfield. What helped the Indians overcome adversity was something called "Heart". A lesser team would have hung their head and accepted defeat, however the 8th grade boys dug deep and found that something extra. Trailing 8-6 with 1:41 to go in the ball game, Derrious Burns intercepted a pass and took it 70 yards for the go ahead score. Lake Air took the kickoff and drove the ball to the Indian 15 yard line where Adonis Haven and Alvin Sanders batted down the desperation pass and secured the Indian victory 13-8. This is University Middle School's first football championship in over a decade.
Jaime Estrada, Carlos Rosado, Miguel Guerra, Akem Bradley, Davonne Majors, Josh Aguilar, and Demarcus Haliburton made up our offensive line that showed extreme heart. Darak Maze came in to spell an exhausted Haliburton and learned the Tight End position pretty quick. Byron Monroe and Jonathan Ochoa both sustained injuries due to their hard play, but came back into the game because they are just plain tough. Darius Alley played well on both sides of the ball. Alvin Sanders caught the bomb from Haven that would make your jaw drop. Sanders beat the double coverage and had to turn on the jets to catch up to the Haven spiral. Haliburton looked like "Earl Campbell" breaking though the line on the inside run. All year though it has been the "Indian D" that has really stood out. In six ball games the defense only allowed 13 points. That is "Awesome". Coach Uptmore and myself are very proud of the effort and sportsmanship shown by the 8th grade boys. We hope they take their tenacity to other places besides the sports arena like the classroom where they can show their teachers that they can behave and help set the example for the entire school. If you see any of these young men today please congratulate them on their effort. Thank you for your support.
Great Job coaches and players!
